What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous mineral. It is mined in Canada, the Soviet Union and South Africa. There are three common types of asbestos: chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite. Asbestos possesses substantial resistance to heat, chemical corrosion, and tensile strength and has been used for a variety of residential, commercial and industrial products. Commonly, asbestos is used as an insulation material and for acoustical and decorative purposes.

Health Effects

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that affects the lungs. Any amount of exposure to asbestos may present a health risk. Most asbestos fibers are microscopic, therefore protection must be used when there is a possibility of exposure. Health effects are not immediate and may take at least 15 years to develop. The three most common diseases associated with asbestos are asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Do I need an Inspection?

Prior to renovation or demolition, an asbestos inspection must be performed in accordance with 40 CFR, Part 61, Subpart M, National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP). Michigan law requires an inspector to be licensed for conducting an asbestos inspection (or taking samples for analysis). An inspection includes a review of building plans, developing a sampling strategy, and collecting bulk samples of suspect materials. Bulk samples are analyzed utilizing a polarized light microscope (PLM) to determine the presence of asbestos. Materials containing greater than one percent asbestos are considered asbestos containing.

Most Common Asbestos Containing Materials:

· Pipe/Duct Insulation
· Floor Tiles
· Fireproofing
· Plaster/Drywall Compound
· Ceiling Tile
· Roofing Materials
· Siding Material

What Happens if Asbestos is Identified?

If the asbestos containing materials in your building are in good condition, you don't have to remove them unless you expect the materials to be disturbed. If the material is not in good condition, becomes damaged, or if construction activities could in any way disturb the material, you will need to contact a licensed abatement contractor.
